My Journey
In the early 1950s, when growing coffee was forbidden under colonial rule, my grandfather chose a heroic path of vision and courage. As he built the family home, he hid precious coffee seedlings in its foundation, planting hope beneath the very walls that would shelter his children. That same home raised all his family, with coffee trees outside standing tall as symbols of strength and endurance.
When worldwide demand for coffee rose and colonial restrictions eased, he embraced the moment with determination, expanding his vision by purchasing more land and planting coffee across the hills. He believed in education as deeply as he believed in the land. He sent his children to school and even ensured they furthered their studies abroad. My own father traveled to Russia, where he earned a Master's in Chemical Engineering, before returning to Kenya. Sadly, he later passed on-leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, discipline, and sacrifice.
In 2001, while I was still young, my grandfather divided his wealth among the family through a ballot. My name was included, and the coffee portion I now hold was entrusted to me then. As I grew up, started working, and stepped into my own calling. I officially began tending to it in the early 2010s.
The farm itself was planted by both my grandparents. My grandmother often told me how, on my portion, she knelt in the rain as she placed each seedling into the soil-blessing it with her prayers, her hands, and her hope for the future. Her words still echo in me: "If you plant with love, the cup will never lie." Today, as a third-generation farmer, I carry their story across oceans. Urban Hortipro is more than coffee; it is courage laid in a foundation, freedom embraced with vision, education paid forward, and love planted in the rain. From the volcanic red soils of Kenya to your cup, every sip is a taste of sacrifice, resilience, and legacy.
And this story is bigger than me. I am bringing together coffee farmers to sell our coffee directly abroad, giving them better prices and paying them instantly so that the sweat they pour into the land turns into food on their tables. I keep bringing farmers together because my dream is for every coffee farmer to live the life they have always dreamed of from the proceeds of their labor.
From Kenya's Soil to America's Cup: Our Journey
Ziara Coffee didn’t start in the boardroom. It started on a farm.
My story begins with my grandfather, a Kenyan farmer who understood soil, seasons, and patience long before coffee became a global commodity. He didn’t farm for trends. He farmed for legacy. Coffee was planted not just for income, but for family, community, and continuity.
A Legacy In Every Bean
As the land was passed down, a portion of that farm was eventually allocated to me. It wasn’t just acreage, it was responsibility. Responsibility to steward the land well, to respect the work of those who came before me, and to think beyond myself.
That farm shaped how I see coffee — not as a product, but as a process, a people, and a promise.
Growing Up With Coffee-and Questions
As I grew older and became more involved in farming, I began asking hard questions. Why does Kenyan coffee rank among the best in the world, yet most farmers struggle to earn fairly?
Why do beans leave our country anonymously, only to return to us as expensive brands we don't own?
Why are the people closest to the soil the furthest from the value?
I watched farmers do everything right-plant, prune, harvest, and process-yet still lose control at the final and most profitable stage of the journey.
That disconnect stayed with me.
The Journey to America
Coming to the United States opened my eyes even wider.
Here, I saw how coffee was marketed, branded, priced, and experienced. I saw how origin stories, when told properly, created connection and trust. I saw how consumers cared not just about taste, but about where something comes from and who it supports.
And I realized something powerful: Kenyan farmers don't lack quality. They lack access, ownership, and representation.
Ziara Coffee was born from that realization. Not Just My Farm But Our Farms.
Beyond a Single Farm
Ziara Coffee is intentionally built to be bigger than me.
Yes, we source coffee from my own family farm, but that’s only part of the story. We also work with local Kenyan farmers and trusted partners, ensuring their coffee is sourced ethically and purchased at the best possible prices, not squeezed margins.
We believe farmers should benefit from:
- Fair and transparent pricing
- Long-term relationships, not one-off transactions
- Seeing their coffee reach premium international markets
Our approach is simple but intentional:
We combine coffee from our own farms with that of local farmers, carefully selected and quality-graded, then import it to the United States—not as anonymous bulk beans, but as proudly sourced Kenyan coffee with a story.
When you drink our coffee, you’re not just tasting one farm—you're tasting a community.
Why This Matters to Me
This work is personal.
I’m building Ziara Coffee so that:
- Kenyan farmers can access the American market with dignity
- Coffee producers are partners, not suppliers
- The next generation sees farming as an opportunity, not a struggle
My vision is not just to export coffee but to create a pathway where more Kenyan farmers can come on board, grow sustainably, and participate in global value creation.
This is about ownership and legacy. This is about rewriting how African agriculture shows up in the world.
A Journey Built on Values
Ziara Coffee is still growing, just like the farms it represents.
But the foundation remains the same:
Good soil. Honest work. Fair value.
And a belief that when farmers are respected, everyone wins.
From my grandfather’s farm to your cup—this is the journey we invite you into.
